Copyright Free

In our sound task, our group had to go on certain website called 'Creative Commons' to choose a suitable background sound/tune that would go appropriately with the opening of a film called 'Submarine'.
The reason we were instructed to use those two specific websites was because they only consist of copyright free tracks.

  What is Copyright?
Copyright allows the music artist or the creator of other media's such as books, photos, film, etc. to rightfully have their work protected from being used without permission and being paid. They have legal rights to decide how their work will be distributed and the payments they will receive.
If anyone does decide to not use copyright, this action is actually breaking the law!

Creative Commons

Creative Common is a site where you can search for music which is copyright free. For our Submarine soundtrack we used the CC license. This license lets you distribute, remix, tweak and build upon your work.

Once you enter the site you can click on the explore tab where it lets you search for different types of music, using the different search engines such as: SoundCloud, Jamendo, ccMixter, SpinXpress

For our Submarine soundtrack we used Jamendo, as we though this was the easiest to use.

Once you enter the search, a number of different tracks will come up, where you can listen to before choosing to download.

By clicking on the download button this will enable you to download straight to your computer and then use on your own clip.

Submarine soundtrack test

Submarine Soundtrack Effect

For the opening of the film 'submarine', our group chose a rock tune as we agreed it the most suitable genre for this specific opening. The reason is due to the dark lighting from the start and the setting of the teenage room which is quite messy and dim, it also has sort of quiet and serene feel to the atmosphere brought out by the calm view from the teenage boys window which he is staring out from of the sunset and the beach - this goes perfecto with the soundtrack our group had chose for the opening of the 'submarine' film, because even though its a rock tune, we carefully chose one which is a mix of melodic and upbeat tune making it perfectly suitable for the extract.
Due to the short limited amount time we had to for this task, we were not able to personally edit the soundtrack which we had intended to do at the beginning, but were still content with the track we've chosen as there was no need to make any changes or alterations.

Breakfast Club - Editing

Breakfast Club - Editing

While we were editing what we found difficult was getting a smooth transition of showing the characters getting out of the car and then showing the cars which were toy cars, this made the editing difficult.
As there is a voice over in the original scene we had to record our voice on a flip cam and the upload it onto the computer and the import it into Final Cut Pro which was time consuming. We had to extend some of the scenes in order to get the voice over to fit the scene.
Another thing we found time consuming was that during the scenes where there characters are speaking we would have to cut the voice over in the background and then bring the voice over when the characters had no dialogue.
One thing we will take back from this, is that we will have to be organised- we will have to plan the script before and spend more time on editing to get a smooth transition. During our free time we will have to use Final Cut Pro in order to make the film interesting than the others.

Breakfast Club - Filming

Breakfast Club - Filming

From watching the original opening of the Breakfast Club, we thought it was a simple task doing a shot by shot remake. However once we stared filming we realised it was actually a very difficult task. at the beginning of the Breakfast Club the student are seen coming to school in cars, the problem we faced was that we do not drive so instead we had to use toy cars.

We then had to show how the characters were going to be coming out of the cars as we used toy cars, this made it very hard as the toy cars are small and it made it very time consuming.

Another problem we faced was, once we looked back at our footage we realised that in some of the scenes, in the background your were able to see camera equipment and some of the props. This is something that we will need to make sure that in our film that we do not make the same mistake.

What we in our group all found hard was that we were very restricted  as we were not able to leave the college grounds and film outside. Also we were put under pressure as we had to film in a short space of time.

For film next time we will make a storyboard and have a digital storyboard and have the script and props before filming in order to work quicker during pre production. During editing we will also need to work quick in order to finish on time so each person will be allocated to do something different so we finish on time.

BREAKFAST CLUB REMAKE STORYBOARD

Planning

Shot by Shot Remake

For this task out group is going to be going a shot by shot remake of the beginning scene from The Breakfast Club. The shot by shot remake is going to be showing the students arriving to school in different modes of transport and who drops them off to school.
When we film the remake we are going to be using a digital storyboard of the original in order to help us when we make the remake. For example using the same shot movement and camera angle.

At the opening of the scene there is a narrator who talks about the different students that come for school detention. We are introduced to the Brain, Princess, An Athlete, A Basketcase and The Criminal.

The Princess
The first character we are introduced to is the ' Princess'. She is dropped off by her father and she is seen arriving in a BMW car. She is a very rich spoilt character as she tells her dad she does not understand why she should miss shopping for detention.

The Brain
The second character we are introduced to is the 'Brain'. He is dropped off by his mum and brother, he is driven to school in a regular family car.We can tell he is the 'brain' as he has been taught to work hard from the conversation he has with his mother.

The Athlete
The  third character we are introduced to is the 'Athlete'. He is dropped off to school by his dad who is seen driving a traditional pick up truck. H
e gets a lot of pressure from his dad as he is working towards a scholarship as his future depends on it.

The Criminal
The fourth character introduced is the 'criminal'. He is seen walking in front of a car which portrays him as a ' I don't care attitude.'

The Basketcase
The fifth character we are introduced is the 'basketcase.' We see the girl coming out of an expensive looking car.
She is seen as an outsider, as not even her parents say bye to her when leaving they just drive off which implies they do not care about her.

As the characters arrive they are dropped off at the school entrance.

PROGRESS REVIEW

After looking through each of my posts that i have posted up on the group blog, i think i am actually doing quite well by using good standard of English and posting up pictures and gifs to support my point. Though, i could be more creative by using other applications to make my posts more interesting and eye catching. I am also happy with the amount of blogging i have done because i am not too behind from being upto date, just two posts behind which i intend to catch up on very soon. but generally i think me and my group have been working quite well together by sharing out tasks and giving our opinions confidently.

Progress Review

All my posts are up to date and I use different types of ICT for my blog and my use of terminology is good whilst writing my blogs. However I think I could develop on my ICT skills and use a different range such as vlogs and prezzi as I currently only use gifs and images. I also need to blog more about other ideas and what i have found out from watching teen movies.

Breakfast Club - Characters

At the opening of the Breakfast Club we are introduced to many different characters, which we can also be heard by the narrator at the beginning of the clip.
The different characters are:
  • Princess
  • The Brain
  • An Athlete
  • Criminal
  • The Basketcase
The Princess
The first character we are introduced to is the ' Princess'. She is dropped off by her father and she is seen arriving in a BMW car. You can clearly tell she is your typical spoilt rich girl, this is shown through the conversation she has with her father as she doesn't not understand on why she should miss out on shopping to be at a Saturday detention. Her father drops her off to her detention, this tells the audience that he does care about her well being.

The Brain
The second character we are introduced to is the 'Brain'. He is dropped off by his mum and brother, he is driven to school in a regular family car. We can tell he is the 'brain' as he has been taught to work hard from the conversation he has with his mother in the car as she tells him 'to figure out a way to study' during detention. We can tell his mother is very concerned and shocked so this suggests that it is unusual for him to have Saturday detention.

The Athlete
The  third character we are introduced to is the 'Athlete'. He is dropped off to school by his dad who is seen driving a traditional pick up truck. We can not tell what kind of background he comes from but he gets a lot of pressure from his dad as he is working towards a scholarship as his future depends on it. It is also unusual for him to get Saturday detention.

The Criminal
The fourth character introduced is the 'criminal'. He is seen walking in front of a car which portrays him as a ' I don't care attitude.' He is also seen coming alone to the detention which suggests this is a regular occurrence for him.

The Basketcase
The fifth character we are introduced is the 'basketcase.' We see the girl coming out of an expensive looking car however, we do not see the person who is dropping her off to school. She is seen as an outsider, as not even her parents say bye to her when leaving they just drive off which implies they do not care about her. This also suggests that Saturday detention is a regular occurrence for her.

Film Opening Sequence

During the bogging of a magority of movies you will see...

  1. An ident - examples of this would be Warner Brothers, Touchstone, Fox ect
  2. The distrubution compiny
  3. The production compiny
  4. The film title
  5. The stars and actors
  6. Castung
  7. Costume disigner
  8. Music
  9. Editor
  10. Production compiny
  11. Director

In some cases the directors name comes up twic, once before the film title and once again after the time line has come to an end.

Stroy Board Of Travelling And Arriving

For our storyboard our source of travelling was a skateboard. We planned to use numerous types of camera shots such as tracking, close up, freeze frame and mid shots to focus on the characters journey to school. we did not want to expose the characters face until the end to surprise the audience by revealing the character as a nerd with a geeky look by him wearing glasses and having braces. The way we surprised the other students by showing the character showing off his skateboard skills.

Donnie Darko

From watching the Donnie Darko clip it has a typical convention of a teen film as it is set in a school. We know this from the use of mise en scene as there are pupils dressed in school uniforms. At the beginning of the clip the students arrive at school in a school bus. The teachers are also dressed in formal clothing and are holding books and folders.
The school uniform is worn in various ways to show the different types of characters for example the scene at 0.27 three boys are dressed appropriately
for school by having their top shirt button done up and carrying a school bag whereas another boy is shown with his shirt untucked and is slouching while walking portraying him as the careless stereotype. This is effective as it is showing the different types of characters at the school.

The setting of the hallway showing the locker where the students are preparing their books and at the end of the scene when the teacher is shown writing on the board and the students are getting ready for the lesson.

For camera and editing different shots are used to emphasis the different characters. At 0.55 a close up shot used on the boy as he is sniffing drugs, and tracking is used when he is walking through the corridor and is throwing nasty looks at the other students and teachers.

Tracking and mid shot is used on a particular teacher compared to the other teachers, she has a longer screen time compared to the others. This may suggest that she has a more dominant role in the film. The camera captures a close up of her throwing a weird glance at the group of girls dancing this my indicate she may be in conflict between students.

There many different characters in the first scene of the clip. One of the characters we are introduced is the perfect girl she is seen as a bit of a vain character as she is seen looking at the mirror and doesn't communicate with other students. There is the criminal who is very careless while he takes drugs at school in the open, he seems not to be bothered and care about school as he is not dressed smart and is slouching while walking.

Analysis of a teen film: 21 Jump Street

21 Jump Street

The film I have decided to analysis is 21 Jump Street, this film is about a pair of underachieving cops who are sent back to their old high school to go undercover and bring down a synthetic drug ring.

Main Cast

- Jonah Hill as Morton Schmidt
- Channing Tatum as Greg Jenko
- Dave Franco as Eric
- Brie Larson as Molly
- Rob Riggle as Mr. Walters
- DeRay Davis as Domingo
- Ice Cube as Capt. Dickson

21 Jump Street is considered to be a teen movie because it shows teenagers and how they act when they're in a high school environment. Although the actors are not teenagers, they portray teenage characters in the beginning of the film and then when going undercover they take on the stereotypical characteristics of teenagers in order to fit in. Also, the film was mainly created for a teenage audience as the setting is mainly based in a high school. It also explores themes and topics that would appeal to teenagers, such as: Relationships, Drugs, Sex, Partying, Rebellion, Prom, etc.

The conventions which makes this a teen film are unlike any other film. Usually, you would have a girl and a boy develop feelings for each other as the film goes on. However, in this film we see the relationship between Jenko and Schmidt and how that evolves. Like any other teen film, Jenko is the stereotypical good looking Jock who doesn't care about school and is rebellious to the school system, but then you have Schmidt who is obsessed with Eminem which is shown with the bleached hair and the clothes he wears, he is a science geek, he has low self esteem and follows the school system. However when they are sent undercover back to high school as students, the stereotypical roles are reversed as being the jock isn't seen as cool and being smart is seen as cool among the students of today at high school.

Step Up 2: The Streets Review

Step Up 2: The Streets Review

Step Up 2 is the sequel to Step Up. Step Up 2 is a teen drama as it has typical locations seen in teen films such as being placed at a school. The themes for this teen film is romance, drama, relationships, and dance. The conventions that make this a teen drama is the romance between the two main characters Chase and Andie. Another reason this teen drama was a typical teen film was because of how the characters were portrayed, Chase was the typical charming 'good-looking' boy and Andie is the rebellious teenager who then starts to attend the prestigious Maryland School of the Arts and is seen as an outcast at first but then becomes popular as she and Chase form a dance group and compete at The Streets.

One way this film reflects on teens and modern culture is even though all the characters are from different backgrounds and culture but yet they still have the same dream to become dancers. Another way this film reflects on teenagers nowadays is that most teens are underestimated or misunderstood before been given a chance. Also another way would be through competition, most teens nowadays are always competing against each other and everything is a competition on who does best and who comes first.
The clique in this teen film is different to other cliques in teen films the characters do different things at the beginning of the film but then join as a dance group and are only seen together while rehearsing and out of school as they are competing in a competition while attending MSA which is forbidden. They are not your typical clique that you would find in a teen film. For example like ' the mean girls' or 'the nerds', in this clique you have an element of everything including, the nerd, the good -looking guy and the outcast. They do however become popular at the end of the movie when the compete at The Streets and do a dance routine which is well choreographed and they out shine they other dance groups that are battling at The Streets.

One way this film is different is that where the dancing takes place is in the streets and the film is more to dance and competition. The film is different from the Bling Ring as it does have a happy ending. Andie is seen as an outcast when she first attends MSA and is underestimated by the director of the school but then becomes popular at the end of the film, this is something common to other teen films such as High School Musical. One thing this film represents is the influence of friends, at the beginning of this film Andie is seen with a  group of dancers who vandalise and are wanted by the police but once she starts attending MSA and leaves 410 her previous dance group she becomes focused on her education and dancing. The reason I like this film is because of the choreography of the dance routines  taken place and it has a romance side to it as well as a happy ending.

Analysis of Teen Movie

Twilight

The teen movie i have chosen to do a analysis of is twilight, i chose this movei because it is a very popular movie and is a typical conventional teen movie.
The movie is about a girl who starts and new school and falls in love with a guy at the school who she later finds out is a vampire.

The movie was directed by Ctherine Hardwicke.
The movie was produced by Wyck Godfrey
The screenplay was written by Melissa Rosenberg

The main actors of the movie were:
   -Kristen Stewart as Bella Swan
   -Robert Pettinson as Edward Cullen
   -Taylor Lautner as Jacob Black
   -Ashley Green as Alice Cullen
   -Kellan Lutz as Emmet Cullen
   -Jackson Rathbone as Jasper Cullen
   -Nikki Reed as Rosalie Cullen

The twilight movie is a romance fantisy film based on a novel. The movie is a teen movie because it has the conventions of a typical teen movie. The movie starts off in high school with there being a new kid, this new kid is Bella, the  movie also has an outsider charicter that no one really talks to, who sticks to his own group, this is Edward Cullen throughout the movie the two encounter each others presance quite a few times and they both end up liking each other. This attracts the teen audince, girls in particular because of the romance between Bella and Edward.
The movie has conventions of a typical teen movie, these conventions consit of the locations that the movie is placed in; at first they are in high school, there are also scenes at the library, the bedroom ect. The movie also has conventional charicters; the outcast, the new person, the pretty girl, the good looking guy ect.
Because twilight is a romance fantisy film the movie has vampires, this attracts audinces that are into the fantisy type of movies. The twilight movie also had fans before the movie came out due to the novels being sucessful, this also enhanced success in the movie.
The fantisy side of the movie is what makes twilight diffrent to other conventional teen movies, the movie is about vampires and how a vampire falls in love with a humen, but the twilight movie is diffrent to other typical vampire movies which makes it diffrent as well as successful.

I like this movie because it has a diffrent portrayal of vampire movies it also has an interesting love stoy that goes on through out the movie, the movie story later becomes a love triangle in the sequals to the movie which keeps me interested to find out what happenes with the couple in the end.
This is a very good movie for teenage girls to watch because it has all the conventions that a teenage girl would like.
